Edit I'm in the no monthly sub world too but shoot for the Graymoor vanilla edition if the price difference is not large, honestly it's a lot of content you're getting.

Absolutely. Most (all?) of the main-main story quests are actually solo-only.Ok I'll finally bite. Can you at least finish the main story solo?
No, but if you're going to be doing any amount of crafting the monthly sub might be worth it because, among other things, it gives unlimited storage for crafting ingredients. Totally playable and enjoyable without it, though.is a sub required to play this? Thinking of buying since it's on sale

Will give you the content in all the CE expansions released so far, so it's the more complete pack you can buy. There are some quests, cities, and dungeons that are paid. You can buy them in game using crowns or subscribe to ESO+ to get access to everything. AFAIK the CE only has cosmetics vs the standard edition. I wouldn't worry too much about the DLCs and stuff before you try the game, getting all expansions up to Graymoor can get you busy for more than 150 hours with well crafted story content.Does the Greymoor Digital Collector's Edition get you everything that has been released so far? Always get a bit confused whenever I consider jumping in to this game.

If you want a good MMO, yes.I'm in a loop of buying games and not playing any of them because they don't scratch the itch of a MMORPG with freedom, good quest and without monthly sub.My fellow era members, should i buy the standard ver. of ESO on Steam (super cheap right now) or pass?
If it you want a traditional TES experience, no.
- #22
one does not simply 'buy' a mmorpg.
lol this
Hope you have a lot of time on your hands, cause starting ESO from scratch now means you will have hundreds if not thousands of hours worth of content if you want to see and play it all and I am not exaggerating.

I can't wait to get back into this. I've already sunk a lot of time into this at launch on ps4, but I'm waiting for the ps5 update in June to get back into it because 30 frames is feelsbadman
Ditto. I was on it a while, then took a big break, then came back a few years later and I just couldn't deal with the framerate. But I miss the world.

If you decide to buy it, I'd recommend getting the Greymoor chapter outright since it's on sale. Buying whatever latest chapter there is (not the separate upgrade, but the base game + chapter single purchase) will grant you all the previous chapters for free. If you buy Collector's edition, you'll get Collector's for the previous chapters too.
Blackwood is the new chapter coming out later this year, same rule applies with that one.
EDIT: ok I saw you mentioned Steam. I still recommend getting the chapter instead of just the base game, all those chapters provide access to excellent and very needed content.

I think I am going to give this trial a shot, been itching for a MMO on console to veg out on. How does it run on PS5?
Currently runs at 30fps but the next-gen patch for Series X/PS5 is on June 8th.

All of the games content and quests pretty much is scalable to your character. Start a quest at level 5 and the dungeon and enemies will give you level 5 to 6 rewards which always has the enticing carrot on stick progression.
There will never be a case of your level 5 character entering a level 70 zone and needing to wait until you get to that point to handle that content.
You can jump in at any starting point or any expansion story or quest and the game will tailor that content and rewards to you. It's not going to be a case of using FFXIV for example of needing to finish ARR to get access to Heavensward.
Basically you are given a ton of freedom to handle content, when you want to and not be restricted to a specific progression and being locked out into later expansions and their content until you finish the base content first. Pretty much everything is open to you, much like how single player mainline ES titles are open to you in this regard.

Pretty cool redemption story of how the ZOS dev team did a 180 with this game! I hear the late Robert Altman had a hand in allowing them time and funding to do so
By the way, I'd say to ask on Discoed but I noticed ESO is one of the few games that doesnt allow chatting on the official Discord server. Anyone know why that is by chance?
- #33
ESO has a monthly sub option that has some tempting rewards, but you can definitely play it without that and then commit a little more if you end up loving it. The quests are about as good as you'll get in an MMO, they're fully voiced and quite a few of them offer a relatively compelling short story arc.
And as far as freedom goes, I think ESO does it incredibly well. Content is always scaled to you so you can do any zone in any order, and builds are very freeform, with you mixing weapon skills, class skills, and guild skills together to make a build that fits your interests.
I end up coming back to ESO every few months and getting re-obsessed with it for several weeks. It's a ton of fun and I highly recommend it.

One thing that drove me crazy last I played was the "number bloat" everywhere in the game. Example: I'm a Level 1 character and hurting enemies for 9,000 damage or healing for 15,000.
The numbers are so huge that they sorta lose all meaning for me. I hope Zeni consider doing a big number crunch like other MMOs have, in order to give numbers more real meaning.

The production quality of the game is stellar and EVERYONE being voice acted is huge for me. Didn't realize how much it added till I was supplementing my ESO playtime with other games with text bubbles.
Bruh you can complete 99% of ALL GAME CONTENT solo lol. Main quest, and faction quests/regions are all solo-able and even the dungeons are if you get good enough.Ok I'll finally bite. Can you at least finish the main story solo?
I've pretty much treated it as an unofficial mainline Elder Scrolls entry despite the game being an MMORPG. I've never partied up with anyone except when I feel like matchmaking for dungeons...and that's rare.
I'm making my way through the factions and am on my second one (out of the three) all by myself and at my pace. It's a great game to just get lost in.
Not to mention the amount of content is absolutely STAGGERING. Like I can't even imagine what it would take to 100% this game lol.
Also if you are on next gen consoles, a patch is coming June 8th that needs up the visuals and makes it 60fps, which will be a huge improvement. If you're on PC then sky is the limit.

The content that is available is just... overwhelming. I already played like 500 hours and haven't even finished all of the story content, yet (I bought all of the DLCs, tho).
Game is really great and relaxing and if you like the combination of a Bethesda SP with an MMO you should go for it. Game is something special imo.
- #37
I play it like a single player Elder Scrolls (sort of). I'm only focusing on the various main quest lines and guild quest lines. I made a Dunmer Warden. Still early on but I'm enjoying it after many times just not "getting it" in the past. Not worrying about the usual min/max and stuff that goes on in MMOs. The difficulty scales to you like traditional TES anyways.
Since your looking for the MMO specific features I can't quite comment on it, though I know ESO is one of the most popular up there with FFIV and Wow.

One of the best MMORPGs out there both for SP content and MP content.
Only thing I don't really like is PvP, but still haven't dig up much on that.

Enjoyed the demo so I went for the base game. What builds are people going for?
At a basic level every build tends to be pure stamina melee/bow dps, pure magicka destruction staff, then tanks and heals. Every class has builds for all roles

Unlike most MMOs that have breakthroughs in new gameplay features ala diving, flying, visual improvements, etc., in order to keep things fresh and new and give a new take on old areas, ESO either puts out a new class or new craft type. The new class does fuck all for invested players, because you can't change classes; you just have to start over again with a new toon to play it. As for the new crafting professions, good luck enjoying them without an ESO+ subscription. I can't believe this game is like, what, 6 paid expansions in, and diving or flying still hasn't been introduced?
The environments IMO look very sparse and bland oftentimes, especially in older regions, to the point where if I booted up almost any other open-world fantasy PS4 game after an ESO session, I felt like I just jumped ahead two console generations.
I love that the game can be completely enjoyed outside or crafting without any monthly fees, but the fact that expansions are just literally more of the same with different themes and styles doesn't do it for me, and not being cross-platform really hurts the appeal for me. If this game was cross-platform though, it would be so much bigger than it ever was or will be, which would have allowed for bigger budgets for expansions, but alas.
I think we'll buy the newest expansion every 3 years to get the previous 2 included with the newest at one low price and burn through them for fun, but there's no way I'd pay $40, or even $20 just for one expansion, so it's easy to just come back after a long hibernation and see what's up, and I'll likely be looking forward to it by then. It's a very chill game experience; it's just held back by technical limitations and an apparent low budget for expansions.
